Okinawa (RyuKyu Kingdom) is a prefecture of Japan. It consists of 49 inhabited and 100 uninhabited islands over an area approx. 625 miles by 250 miles square. Okinawa existed independant of Japan until 1609, when the invading Satsuma Clan, from Kagoshima Prefecture, occupied the kingdom. The United States occupied the island from 1947-1972, when it was restored to Japan.
